New ultra-compact multiturn encoders for mobile machines with safety function
 
Automated functions are indispensable in mobile machines. They not only increase the productivity of the machines and relieve the vehicle operator, but above all ensure safety. Precise and safe sensor technology is essential. The integration of these sensors in applications with a small installation space can be a challenge. With the new absolute safety multiturn encoders WV3600MR and WH3600MR, sensor specialist SIKO is presenting the most compact sensors of this type for mobile machines.
 
With a diameter of only 36 mm, the WV3600MR and the WH3600MR are currently the most compact safety multiturn encoders for the field of mobile machines. The safety aspect is in the foreground: Both provide their position and speed values according to SIL2 (IEC 61508) PLd (DIN EN ISO 13849) – and not only over 360°. Thanks to the mechatronic multiturn system, the rotary encoders have a maximum measuring range of 65,536 revolutions (16 bits). They are based on a magnetically contactless measuring system and are battery-independent. Consequently, they work without maintenance for years, even under the harsh operating conditions in mobile machines and at extreme temperatures.
 
Robust and durable
The WV3600MR equipped with a solid shaft and the WH3600MR equipped with a hollow shaft are based on the SIKO PURE.MOBILE sensor platform, whose components were explicitly developed for use in commercial vehicles. This makes the encoders particularly robust and durable. They have high shock and vibration resistance and withstand shaft loads of up to 200 N both axially and radially. In addition, they are certified by the Federal Motor Vehicle Office according to UN ECE R10 (E1). Thanks to their salt mist-resistant housing, the high degree of protection of IP67 and optionally IP6K9K as well as their UV resistance, they are able to withstand adverse environmental conditions – important prerequisites for a long service life in mobile machines.
 
Smart and secure communication
CANopen Safety and, in the future, SAE J1939-76 (Safety) are available as interfaces for both encoders. The device status is indicated by an LED integrated in the connector. This is especially helpful during commissioning and service. In addition to the reliable position and speed data, the sensors can also provide data on the status of the sensor or the machine thanks to other smart functions. Both encoders are optionally available with an M12 plug or cable outlet. Alternatively, the sensors can also be purchased with a GERMAN or AMP Superseal plug. Thanks to the innovative housing design of the rotary encoder, the electric connection can be made either axially or radially – without losing any space.
